National Teen Read Week Celebrated By Metropolitan Library System Libraries

What’s so special about the week of October 14-20?

That’s the week the American Library Association has set aside as Teen Read Week, a time for libraries across the nation to put a special emphasis on the importance of encouraging teens to read.

Your Metropolitan Library System is recognizing central Oklahoma’s teens with not a week of special programming, but full month of it, including lessons in drawing with Bryan Dahlvang and performing improvisational comedy with improv performers from the University of Oklahoma.

“The theme this year is LOL @ Your Library,” said Emily Williams, MLS’s Young Adult Services Coordinator.  “Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative aimed at teens, their parents, librarians and educators. It is celebrated each year during the third week of October, and we expand the festivities here at MLS to the entire month!”

Since 1998, Teen Read Week has encouraged teens to: make time to read for the fun of it, use their local library to discover their interests, and to get reading materials and participate in events at their school or public library.

According to the Nation’s Report Card, many of Oklahoma’s eighth graders do not read at or above proficiency. Literacy is a topic of national concern, and falling test scores and lower graduation rates among teens today are a serious issue. A reading habit increases reading proficiency—the more teens read, the better they read.

“We try to offer programs that are of interest to teens that are already reading but want to enrich their knowledge,” Williams added, “as well as to teens who might just enjoy the program for the program's sake. Hopefully, it will inspire them to start reading."
