Weekend of Asian Culture Comes to Downtown Library

Enjoy an Asian Cultural Festival the first weekend in February at the Downtown Library, 300 Park Avenue.

The first event is a free Asian film fest on February 2 from 1pm - 4pm. The three films that will be shown are "Buddha Mind Monastery," "A New Year Ping Wei," and the wild comedy "Kung Fu Hustle."  The event continues on February 3 with a Pre-Lunar New Year Celebration from 1:00pm – 5:00pm which will consist of Asian cultural activities such as the Dragon Dance and the Lion Dance among others.

“A lot of people,” said Downtown librarian Darlene Browers, “either don’t realize how significant the Asian people have been to the growth of Oklahoma City, or if they do know, they take it for granted.  We feel that if we’re going to celebrate Oklahoma history, we should celebrate all of it.”

The series of programs will highlight local Asian cultures and will feature talent from around the state.  Information booths will be located on the library’s fourth floor, in the 46th Star Room, and performances from Asian communities of Oklahoma will take place there on the stage.  The booths will be open from 1:00 to 5:00pm and the performances will be from 2:00 to 3:00pm.

“Anyone with an interest in Asian culture will enjoy what we have lined up for them,” Browers continues.  “Children will especially get a kick out of the Dragon Dance as performed by the Giac Quang Temple Youth Group, and the Chinese Society’s Lion Dance.  It’s all free and suitable for all ages.”
