"Buy the Box" Booksale Set for September 13
Do you remember how Scrooge McDuck used to swim through a bin full of money? Now you can do the same thing, only with books instead of cash.
The Friends of the Metropolitan Library System’s second “Buy the Box” booksale will be held on Saturday, September 13, at the Library Maintenance Building, 1364 NE 3rd, from 9:00am to 2:00pm.
“We did this for the first time last year,” said Carol Gilbert, Coordinator of the Friends of the Metropolitan Library System, “and everyone had a lot of fun with it.”
The main Friends of the Library booksale, which is held annually in February, is internationally known and has generated millions of dollars for the Metropolitan Library System. In fact, the event is so successful and people are so generous with their donations of books for the sale, a four-month-early pre-sale is now possible.
“We decided we needed to do something to create more storage space,” Gilbert said. “This way, we get the space and readers get the books.”
“Buy the Box” isn’t just a catchy name for the sale. It’s absolutely descriptive. Books will be sold in sealed boxes. Each box will be marked as to the type of book it contains—mysteries, romances, general adult fiction, children’s books, religion, and Reader’s Digest condensed books.
“It’ll be a real grab bag,” Gilbert explained. “Other than type, you won’t know what you’re getting until you open the box. But you know, we’ll be selling the boxes for from three to ten dollars, so if you find only one or two books you get excited about, you still come out ahead.”
In addition to the boxes of books, there will also be some individually priced Christmas and craft books.
“By the time of the big sale in February,” Gilbert added, “a lot of people are Christmased out and they don’t even want to think about buying Christmas books. But they can come and buy some on September 13 and start getting in the mood early.”
Payment can be made by cash or check. If you have questions, please call the Friends of the Library at (405) 606-3763.
