Zydeco Music Swings Into Libraries in March

It comes off the bayous of Louisiana and out of the thickets of east Texas with the swing of a country fiddle, the scratch of a modified washboard called a frottoir, and the raucous squalling of an accordion.

It’s zydeco music, and it will be presented by your Metropolitan Library System 12 concerts during the month of March.  Zydeco masters Leon Chavis and Joseph “Chopper” Chavis will be on hand to get your toes tapping and hands clapping.

“Zydeco isn’t pure Cajun and it isn’t pure blues,” said MLS Director of Outreach Services Dana Morrow, “but a combination of both with the emphasis on blues.  It’s a style of dance music, but if your idea of dancing is something like a fox trot, boy, are you going to be in for a pleasant surprise.”

Zydeco is so intense it has been called “the new salsa.”

“We’ve brought some outstanding musicians to Oklahoma City,” Morrow added, “but we’ve never sponsored concerts of any kind of music that will get you on your feet and moving like this music does.”

The Chavises father and son, from Lawtell, Louisiana, have been playing zydeco all their professional lives.  Leon fronts his own band, The Zydeco Flames, and is popular wherever zydeco is played, which this March will include Oklahoma City as he and his father present the Metropolitan Library System’s Spring Fling event for 2009. All performances are free but seating is limited.
