Acclaimed author Khaled Hosseini will be the guest speaker at the Library Endowment Trust's 12th annual Literary VoicesTM dinner, which is being presented by the Chickasaw Nation.
Publishers usually print 5,000 to 50,000 copies of a mainstream novel by a first-time writer. In 2003, Riverhead Books went to the high end of the scale with a print run of 50,000 copies for the debut publication of Afghan-American novelist Khaled Hosseini, and “The Kite Runner” went on to sell over eight million copies in the United States. In 2007 Hosseini’s second novel, “A Thousand Splendid Suns,” sold a million copies its first week. In 2013 “And the Mountains Echoed,” Hosseini’s third book, sold three million copies in five months “The Kite Runner” was on the best-seller list for over 240 weeks, but beyond his success as a writer, Hosseini has been named a Goodwill Envoy to the United Nations Refugee Agency, and the Khaled Hosseini Foundation has provided aid to countless women, children and homeless refugees in his native Afghanistan.
Literary VoicesTM will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club at 7:00 p.m. The dinner will be preceded by a Patron Party at 6:00. Chair and co-chair for the event are Elaine Levy and Cindi Shelby.
The dinner benefits the Library Endowment Trust, which helps to support the Metropolitan Library System by providing additional funding for programs, materials, and services. This year's event will also include the presentation of the 2014 Lee B. Brawner Lifetime Achievement Award to Mrs. Rita Gunter Dearmon, who is a longtime champion of the library.
In addition to this year’s Presenting sponsor, The Chickasaw Nation, the Pulitzer sponsor is Maggie and Steve Dixon. The Best Seller sponsors are American Fidelity Foundation/First Fidelity Bank/InvesTrust, Devon Energy Corporation, and Inasmuch Foundation/Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. The Publisher’s Choice sponsors are Ann S. Alspaugh, Bank of Oklahoma, Clements Foods Foundation, Frates Insurance/Steven Payne, Mrs. Henry Freede, and Love’s Travel Stops.
